Simple Yet Overlooked Speed Cam Prank

I had one of those “Duh, why didn’t I think of that” moments this morning when I read a news story about how some teenagers have found out how to spoof license plates of their enemies and for performing pranks overall. So how does the prank work?

students duplicate the license plates by printing plate numbers on glossy photo paper, using fonts that are similar to those on Maryland license plates. They then run by a speed camera, so that those they feel have “wronged them” receive a citation in the mail.

I know speed cameras were not a welcomed edition to busy streets in and around Cleveland, Ohio but I can’t believe this prank is that easy to do. However, as was noted at the bottom of the article, someone with the technical know how created a Google Earth KML file mapping out the speed cams. Using technology to fight technology!

  1. The real trick would be to get two identical cars with identical plates and shoot past two different cameras at exactly the same time!

We’ve had speed cameras in the UK for years now and they are very much hated accessories. Many roadmaps and satnav devices locate these traps for you, so you may continue to drive above the limit until you approach a camera, letting you decelerate recklessly just in the nick of time. Thus ‘improving’ road safety.

don’t mind me but I thought that was funny. Red light cameras have also been a heated topic here in the local city and it seems like someone or a group of people are always trying to get rid of them. Too bad it never works.

  3. Are red light cameras to catch people who drive through red lights?

I’m a lifelong pedestrian, so my perspective is different from that of a driver, but it seems to me that every driver who makes a bad decision and gets into an accident probably thought that he had excellent skill and judgement just a few seconds before he made the call. If you get a speeding ticket, then the camera is not to blame: the speed limit is. Maybe it should be higher? If you don’t need to stop at the light, maybe the light doesn’t need to be there!

Either follow the rules or get them changed to something more ‘reasonable’. Or learn to live in society as it is!

Obviously, just my two bob. ;)

@Jeffro – Until people try and fight in court that having Red Light Cameras is Unconstitutional. But, then again their lawyer could loose…
